About Us
Our Vision & Mission
Connecting, Helping and Healing through Faith, Family and Fellowship.
“Therefore go (Connecting) and make disciples of ALL nations, (Helping & Healing)
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Faith, Family & Fellowship)
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
What We Believe
The United Methodist Church is a global denomination that opens hearts, opens minds and opens doors through active engagement with our world. The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today. Our Church History
a strong United Summerville United Methodist Church had been in the hearts, minds, and prayers of people long before the 60 individuals came together on February 14, 1954. Summerville United Methodist Church was officially organized and officers were elected on May 11, 1954. Reverend Robert Hendricks was the first pastor appointed to Summerville and, under his leadership, the church soon grew to 130 members. In May 1956, the first building (present Thomas Hall) was begun. It was completed on September 16, 1956. On July 5, 1959, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the erection of a new sanctuary; and on November 15, 1959, a Consecration Sermon was preached. The church continued to grow, and a 12-room Sunday school annex was completed on November 18, 1962.
During the last 68 years, Summerville has been blessed with many people who have cared for the community. In the past we have had several ministries that have included Habitat for Humanity where Summerville provided the first $3,000 to establish the Habitat office. We donated the land for several of the first houses built. Brother John Thomas served as the lead carpenter for two years of the three Methodist Houses that were built. Our church family furnished most of the funds for the three Methodist houses. We have supported Stewart House in the past and currently support many ministries for people with disabilities. We support the United Methodist Children’s home, we participate in Backpack Buddies program associated with the food bank, backpacks are packed for children who are food insecure. We are part of Communities of Transformation providing under-resourced families with the information, skills, and support they need to create a new future story. We are part of the Operation Christmas Child program and many other ministries as we see God leading us to get involved in.
We currently have a traditional worship service at 11:00 am with a choir. We provide children’s church during worship services and a nursery. We provide adult bible studies and programs for young adults. We have a strong United Methodist Women group and a strong United Methodist Men group.
Come and see all that God is doing at Summerville United Methodist Church!
